Walter in The Sandwich Isles

One of the Gallery Photos features Walter and my daughters Allison and Dorien [then aged 5 and 3]. Just behind them is the great expanse of the Pacific Ocean, beyond the leeward shore of Maui. From the moment of his arrival, our daughters warmed to Walter and he to them -- a kind of Gulliver to our Lilliputians. Wide-eyed traveler that he was, Walter enthusiastically took in all that he saw and did during his two-week stay. He was especially enamored of a rugged shoreline called Waianapanapa, along the remote tropical Hana coast of Maui. Here, powerful blue-green surges break against towering lava seawalls with thunderous effect. Admittedly awestruck, Walter found this coast both compelling and forbidding, and for years afterward -- during our occasional telephone conversations -- he would be certain to remind me of this especially indelible experience, when he witnessed a powerfully beautiful meeting of land and sea.
