Meeting Walter in 1963: The Roberts Family

We had just arrived from Berkeley with our four small children, all under the age of four: Erin, James, Thomas, and Peter. Walter was one of the very first people we met; Warren, my husband, played tennis with him. I had yet to complete all my degrees, and felt a bit intimidated by this elegant man who lived in a posh apartment on State Street. And later on, upon receiving my doctorate, he incorporated me into his rituals as he hooded Fred Rau, who also got his doctorate at the same time, flying in from Hawaii. So, I needn't have worried; Walter always made me feel welcome, competent, and special. We had very little money in those days; Warren's salary was all of $5000, and I recall Walter inviting us to have dinner and go to the ballet when SPAC opened in 1966--that was a treat we shall never forget--and it made us ballet lovers from that moment on. Walter had his Sunday afternoon football watching--and our sons and Warren all went--especially our middle son Tom. He recalls Walter having champagne on New Year's Day for that game. Walter would often come over for supper and I fondly recall him playing Twister with our children--his long, elegant limbs contorted on the floor as he made his limbs go as the game required. One Halloween he arrived in a taxi, dressed as a Beatle for a Halloween party at Chapel House. He visited us in England during our sabbatical year, even coming to see me in hospital when I had oral surgery! Walter was a presence in our lives during the difficult teen years as well, coming to graduation/celebration parties and birthdays, and being a listening ear for us as parents. I vividly recall him at our daughter's engagement party, talking to the new groom and making him feel right at home. Walter had a special quality to make those around him feel at ease. We shall all remember him with fondness, especially the way he helped us make our way beginning our life in Albany in 1963. Anne Roberts
