Walter's Military Record

Created by Timothy 10 years ago
A few years before Walter's death, I obtained his military records from the Canadian govt. Walter had never seen his military records before. We laughed and cried many times reading these old reports, of which here are a few excerpts: *Enlisted on May 18, 1943... A tall well built lad of good appearance, quiet, mature, rather dignified , manner: has an "M" test score denoting high learning ability and holds a B.A. degree. He seems to have adequate stability and to be thoroughly reliable and conscientious. There is little in his background to indicate aggressiveness or leadership ability - but the impression was gained that this could be developed with training. Recommended for infantry and potential officer. *Wounded in action in Italy on September 19, 1944 - sustained injuries to skull and left hand. *Discharged from Canadian Army on September 27, 1945... An intelligent, well adjusted, mature, business like man who apparently has no rehabilitation problems. KNOTTS was a student until enlisting in the army and has now secured a position as an English Instructor at U.B.C. At the same time he is studying for his M.A. and says he will have this degree within a year. He then intends to give up instructing and plans on studying for his Ph.D. and will apply for a training grant while taking this post-graduate work. This man handles himself well and has a very impressive manner of speech. It is felt that he is admirably suited to the teaching profession and his background and interest suggest that he is due success in his field.
