An Elegant Man

Walter Knotts was my favorite teacher at UAlbany. What I learned from him I've carried with me throughout my career. In some English courses, professors will cover several pages and even several chapters at a time in each class. With Walter, we'd be lucky to get through one paragraph in an hour. He would focus on each word, each use of punctuation. He wanted us to understand why each word mattered, to be sure we chose the appropriate word, and why. I'm sure it made the 12 or 13 students in this particular class into far better writers than they were at the start. I've told my sons about Walter. Both are in college now. I tell them about this elegant man, calm, poised, strikingly well- dressed (bow tie, gray wool or flannel slacks and navy blazer) who would instruct, encourage and applaud you. I tell my sons that, if they're fortunate, they'll have a teacher or two who may influence them in the same way. The photos of Walter brought back so many memories. I especially like the sequence of Walter captioned "teaching with heart, passion, love and patience." It was how I remembered him in the late 1970s. The memorial is such a fitting tribute to a man who lived a remarkable life. Jeff UAlbany Class of '77
